Stage 11 runs through hilly wilderness terrain characterized by the many bogs and wetlands you pass. The trail runs almost entirely on forest paths, with the exception of two short stretches on gravel roads.

Stenbjörnskojan, where the stage starts, is an old forest workers' hut with stables from the 1930s. It is now used as a rest and overnight cabin. From here the trail goes up the Stenbjörns mountain. The top consists of rocks from where you have some views of the surroundings.

You continue your hike through varying forest terrain. Sometimes the forest is dense, and the next moment it turns into an airy pine forest with high trunks and moss-covered ground, or a bog that you cross via paths.

The trail passes to the east of the large bog complex Stora Flyten, which consists of gently sloping marshes and arched raised bogs. The size and variety of the bog area has contributed to its wilderness character with bird species such as capercaillie, black grouse and crane.

About 1.5 km west of Avlångskullen is Rudtjärn and Rudtjärnsberget. There is a boulder cave with several passages.

The last kilometer to the stage goal at Trummelsberg you walk along a gravel road. Trummelsberg was once a mill and although most of that time is gone, you can still see some exciting remains such as the ruin of a coal house, a dug canal and the quay. To get to the picnic area, you pass a few houses and then turn onto a small road down to the left. Down here by Lake Stora Kedjen there is a swimming area, large grassy areas and a windbreak etc.

REST AREAS

At the stage start Stenbjörnskojan is a rest cabin. The cabin contains four bunk beds, with room for eight people. Outside there is a fireplace and benches. The site is not ideal for camping as the ground is rocky and uneven, but a place can be found.

It's nice to take a break on the rocks up on Stenbjörnsberget.

At Trummelsberg there is a cozy campsite down by Lake Stora Kedjen. There is a shelter, two fireplaces, tables and benches, a TC and a swimming area with a jetty. There are large grass areas to pitch tents on

STORA FLYTEN

Bruksleden runs along the eastern edge of the Stora Flyten wetland area. Stora Flyten comprises around ten lakes and ponds surrounded by various types of marshes and bogs. Heather and crowberry grow on the bogs. The entire bog area is located in a coniferous forest area where a variety of species of white mosses cover large parts of the ground layer. The marshes are home to demanding species such as marsh marigolds, meadow flowers, meadow lilies and marsh hellebores. The area attracts a variety of wetland birds such as curlew, lapwing, greenfinch, snipe, golden plover, crane, meadow pipit and yellowhammer.

RUDTJÄRNSBERGET

Rudtjärnsberget is located about 1.5 km west of Avlångskullen, which Bruksleden passes a bit north of Stenbjörnskojan. At the mountain there is a cave system where you can crawl and ride your way through long and winding passages. The cave is a crevice/boulder cave formed by cracking the bedrock. Some experience and equipment is required.

TRUMMELSBERG

Five kilometers into the forest, west of road 66, lies Trummelsberg by Lake Kedjen. Of this mill, founded by Olof Trummel in 1622, only ruins remain today. The ore came here from Norberg and the finished ingot or bar iron was then taken to Färna mill. The hammer mill was closed down in 1864, while the smelter continued to operate until 1907. Nature has now reclaimed most of the site, but traces of the busy mill operations remain. Visitors to Trummelsberg can see the remains of the roasting furnace, the large gray stone pillars that were once a coal house, the dug canal, traces of the quay where the barges that transported pig iron docked, and some residential buildings from the 19th century.

Directions

You cannot get to this stage by public transport.

Parking

Parking is available next to the cabin area in Trummelsberg. Due to a dam break at Sågsjön, the road after the parking lot in Trummelsberg is washed away. This means that it is not possible to drive on towards Bockhammar/Skinnskatteberg from highway 66. If you are coming from Bockhammar, you cannot get to the parking lot next to Trummelsberg's slagstone pillar at Stora Kedjen, nor can you drive on towards highway 66. The road to the large picnic area by the lake in Trummelsberg is impassable and the bridge is destroyed. It is therefore not possible to get to the barbecue area and the windbreak.
