The “Från Brunn till Gruva” (“From Well to Mine” in English) bike trail is a route for cyclists of all ages that stretches between the centuries-old Sätra Brunn health resort and historically-preserved Sala Silvergruva (Sala Silver Mine) . Running along unpaved roads through rolling rural landscapes, the approximately 12 km long trail is ideal for leisurely taking in the surrounding farmland and forest from a bicycle seat. It isn’t the fastest route, but it does provide the best opportunity for experiencing Sala's countryside at your own pace. The cycling is manageable for both young and old, as well as cyclists who are experienced and inexperienced alike.

The trailhead at Sala Silvergruva is by the restored hoist house and headframe of the Knektschaktet mining shaft, where there’s also a public trail map.

At Sätra Brunn, the trailhead can be found at the resort’s famous well house. Follow the yellow arrows along the trail that mark its route and direction.

Because the trail is a 12 km long end-to-end route between Sätra Brunn and Sala Silvergruva, you’ll have to turn around and go back the other way to finish at whichever trailhead you started from, cycling a total of 24 km. Therefore, it’s probably best that anyone who only wants to bike the trail once, like those with small children, make transport arrangements to pick them up at the opposite trailhead of where they started.

There’s a lot of nature to see and enjoy on the bike trail along the unpaved country roads. The bike path widens in some sections, and the roads are often free of cars.

There are many opportunities to stop and enjoy the outdoor scenery on the trail, as well as discover what Sätra Brunn and Sala Silvergruva have to offer.

The “Från Brunn till Gruva” (“From Well to Mine”) trail is unique in Västmanland in that it connects two major destinations: the Sätra Brunn health resort and the Sala Silvergruva (Sala Silver Mine). Biking the trail between the two is a special experience no matter what you ride — a high-end mountain bike, a kid’s bicycle with training wheels, or a beach cruiser on balloon tyres. Overnight accommodations can be booked at either destination. You can rent bicycles at Sätra Brunn. At Sala Silvergruva, you can explore local mining history both above and below ground.

A section of the bike trail goes over private land, so it’s important to be considerate of local nature, as well as any animals and people you encounter. In the areas close to buildings and private property, especially one place where the trail passes farmland with houses and active agriculture, keep an eye out to avoid large machinery.

You’ll cross a major roadway, Västeråsvägen road , at two points on the trail. Be sure to carefully check that it’s safe and clear of cars before crossing. You should be extra watchful of any children, and they shouldn’t cross the road on their own due to occasional heavy traffic.

The start/end of the “Från Brunn till Gruva” (“From Well to Mine”) trail at Sala Silvergruva is not far from Måns Ols Utvärdshus (Måns Ol’s Inn), where you can go for an “after-bike" drink or meal, and even take a swim in the neighbouring Lake Långforsen. There’s a bicycle rack at the inn, allowing you to keep a close eye on your bike from the outdoor dining area during summer.

Trail length: About 12 km

Part of the bike trail goes over private land, so please be considerate. It’s proper courtesy to cheerfully greet others and slow down on private property. The trailhead at Sala Silvergruva is by the restored hoist house and headframe for the Knektschaktet mining shaft.

The trailhead at Sätra Brunn health resort is by the well house.
