Here, a modern flow trail meets Sala's industrial history. A white 2.3 km round loop that is machine-built from lime. Curvy, fun and suitable for new and experienced cyclists. Because it's on historic industrial land, with an old lime mill and all that history

About Strå Kalkbruk
Strå was an important industry that played a central role in the development of Sala in the 20th century. Under the leadership of Carl Frunck, small-scale lime mining began as early as 1898, but Strå Kalkbruk was formally established in 1906. It quickly grew into one of the city's largest employers, employing several hundred people during its heyday. It mainly produced quicklime, which was used in the construction, industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as burnt dolomite, an important component in the steel industry. For decades, Strå Kalkbruk was a busy workplace and an important part of the local economy. But as demand declined and the industry changed, the business closed in 1997. After that, the buildings began to fall into disrepair, and in 2014 the mill was demolished.

Today, the area has been revitalized by the Strå Flowtrail - a white, machine-built cycle path created from materials from the interior of Sala. The trail winds through the former industrial landscape with gentle curves, and along the way there are traces of the mill's history in the form of walls, scrap metal and piles of materials that were also used in the construction of the trail. The land you are cycling on today is leased by Nordkalk and Björka Minerals for the Strå Flowtrail.

When you reach Bunker Hill, the highest point of the trail, you pass bunker-like formations - a remnant from the time when the hill was used for aerial reconnaissance. From here, cables ran to a communications center in the Sparbankshuset at the square in central Sala. Strå Kalkbruk is part of Sala's industrial history, but the site lives on through the scenic and fast-paced flow trail - where present and past meet among the white curves of the unique landscape.

**OBS! Help us reduce wear and tear and improve your experience. In wet and soft conditions - be patient and avoid cycling and let the trail rest.

For those who want to explore what more Sala can offer on mtb, there is also Knektleden and Ekebymosse-loop which are natural trails and offer some technical cycling that complements the well-built flowy Strå. Start for Knektleden and Ekebymosse-loop can be found at Sala Silvergruva.

Parking

The parking lot is close to the trail. If the barrier is open, it is ok to park inside the area for now. A parking lot will be built in 2025.

Surface

A mix of the limestone materials found locally in the area. The trail is machine-built and smooth. The lime material is relatively new to build with and just like most machine-built trails when there is heavy rainfall, it makes the trail extra vulnerable to wear, so we ask you cyclists to respect Strå Flowtrail's need for rest on those occasions, so that it can last a long time with good quality. Then a turn on the Knektleden or Ekebymosse fits perfectly.

Vegetation

**There are a couple of deployed sections in wood and steel that you should only choose if you feel ready for it.
