Paddle around the gem of Västerås - Björnön

Paddling around Björnön in Lake Mälaren just outside Västerås is a true classic. The round trip is 11 km and makes a suitable day trip for beginners. However, beginners should know that this tour takes you out on the outside of Björnön where you can be exposed to both wind and boat waves. The tour is graded as a medium difficulty paddle but if it is windy the difficulty level of the tour increases significantly.

You can of course start your paddle around Björnö at any pier or shore edge, but a proven favorite is at the launching site at Hässlösundet right next to Björnögården. At Björnöngården you will find both toilets, parkingand bus stop. Here you can also start or end your paddling trip with a lovely lunch or coffee at Björnön's own Wåffelbar. If you need to rent a kayak or canoe, you can do so here through Aktivt uteliv which is located at Björnögården. Aktivt uteliv also offers guided day trips and canoeing courses.

Around Björnön there are a number of beaches and jetties where you can go ashore for a coffee or a break. Use the map function in the nature map to find recommended jetties and beach huts. A short distance from the southwestern edge of Björnön you will find the uninhabited island Stora Skärplingen. This is a charming little island that makes a perfect rest stop on your paddle around Björnön. You can step ashore at the small sandy beach.

Paddling around Björnön is a lovely day trip, but of course it is possible to do this paddle as part of a longer visit to Björnön and Västerås. At Björnön Friluftsområde there is both camping and stugby where you can spend the night.
